When couples reach out to me to start planning a destination wedding in Mexico or the Caribbean, one of the first (and biggest) decisions isn’t about flowers or attire. It’s where everyone will stay. This choice matters more than you would realize.
The two most common options for a destination wedding in these regions are:
Since my specialty/niche is in the all-inclusive destination wedding experience, I have a lot of insight and input here. But I also realize that this option is not for everyone. The resort you choose will shape the entire wedding weekend: from vibe to dining to costs. So it’s helpful to know how each option looks, right up front. Neither is “better.” They’re just built for different priorities.

Guests pay one price for the stay through the booking process, and most of their vacation costs are covered on-property. Small, discretionary spending is extra (i.e. spa treatments and excursions), but basic necessities are already paid for upon arrival. Your wedding is usually hosted at the resort and supported by an in-house wedding team with preset packages and perks.
Guests pay for the room only. They’ll pay separately for meals, drinks, transportation, and activities—or you (the couple) may choose to host more events to keep everyone together.
EP venues in this region usually include: Boutique hotels, Villas, Beach Clubs or historic properties.
In short, you can look at the options like this:
Why are All-Inclusive Weddings so popular? Because they eliminate any unforeseen expenses for your guests once in the destination.

What guests love:
Potential drawbacks:
Best for: couples who want a contained, social, low-logistics wedding weekend.
For other couples, the European Plan model works better.
What guests love:
Potential drawbacks:
Best for: couples who want a more immersive destination experience and don’t mind extra planning (or hiring someone who does).
So that’s the guest experience. What about the couple? What are the differences between planning an All-Inclusive wedding versus European Plan?

Most all-inclusive resorts offer tiered wedding packages that include:
Important note: “Included” doesn’t always mean “exactly what you want.” Many advertised packages are starter bundles: you’ll have to upgrade to get custom design, event lighting, premium venues, better menus, or enhanced décor. (Read more about the “Hidden Costs of a Destination Weddings“). They tried to charge us for a “dance floor” when we got married.
EP venues (boutique hotels, villas, historic properties, private venues) often offer venue rental + à la carte services, such as:
This setup gives you more customization—but also more line items. This is the perfect wedding for couples who want more involvement in the planning and/or want to utilize their own vendors. But beware, paying individual vendors will drive up costs for the couple.
Guests typically pay:
Why guests often prefer it: they can budget upfront and relax. No one wants to be doing mental math at every meal when they’re supposed to be celebrating love.
Guests pay:
Budget reality: EP can be amazing, but it can also turn into “We came for a wedding and accidentally funded a small restaurant’s entire quarterly revenue.”
If your guest list includes people who don’t love uncertainty (or surprise spending), all-inclusive usually wins on peace of mind.
Choose All-Inclusive if you want:
Choose EP if you want:
In Mexico and the Caribbean, all-inclusive weddings often create the smoothest, most seamless guest experience, especially for:
EP weddings can be stunning — but they work best when:
The biggest mistakes I see?
Couples choosing EP venues for the aesthetic without fully considering guest experience and budgeting.
Because the truth is: EP weddings can be stunning… but if your guests aren’t planners (or don’t want to coordinate meals/transport), the experience can feel fragmented.
And all-inclusive weddings can be incredible… but if you want a highly personalized design and a one-of-a-kind venue, you’ll need the right property and a realistic upgrade budget.
